Well, I'm close to producing a new edition, if only I can sort out the copyright issues! Stay tuned.

I haven't got to the Sarah Black book yet, and I'm certainly very interested in what she says about eugenics. Sounds like it could be very relevant to my essay.

Juxtabook - I think you should definitely read it. It's pretty short and it's very easy to read. And plus, if it means you will sell it then all the better - there only seems to be one edition in print over here at the moment!

Thanks for this review. Rare to see it mentioned at all. I have had a copy parked in stock for a coule of years and should get round to reading it . However, secondhand bookseller's lore states that if I start reading it then it'll sell.

Have you read 'The Darkest Streets' yet? Sarah Wise thinks Morrison had a rather different agenda, and was more eugenicist than social reformer.

It's interesting that the Old Nichol area was razed to the ground and the slums have been replaced with swanky apartments, which the likes of Kiddo and Dicky wouldn't have a hope of inhabiting. The problem was simply moved further away.

Mind you, Morrison does make the point that the Jago slums are actually more expensive per square footage than property in the wealthy parts of town. People were making money from renting out these squalid hovels, such as Mother Gapp in this novel, and John Jarndyce in 'Bleak House'. I'm sure there are also plenty of real world examples.
