End of Year Book Meme

I, along with many other book bloggers, did this meme last year, reflecting on my 2008 reading. I’ve decided to do it again this year, so without further ado… Do let me know in the comments if you’ve done it this year as well.

How many books read in 2009?
So far, an even more disappointing than last year 42. That said, I’m hoping to increase that by a couple over the last two weeks of December.

Fiction/Non-Fiction ratio?
29 fiction versus 13 non-fiction

Male/Female authors?
18 men, 23 women, and 1 collection of short stories featuring both (though edited by a woman)

Favourite book read?
The Yellow Wallpaper and Selected Writings by Charlotte Perkins Gilman

Least favourite?
I Think There’s Something Wrong With Me by Nigel Smith

Oldest book read?
Twilight Stories by Rhoda Broughton, originally published in 1873, but now in a shiny new edition by Victorian Secrets.

Newest?
Not including new editions of old novels, I think it would have to be Howard’s End is on the Landing by Susan Hill, which I read within a week or so of its publication.

Longest book title?
Love and Eugenics in the Late Nineteenth Century: Rational Reproduction and the New Woman by Angelique Richardson

Shortest title?
It’s a tie between Ghosts by Henrik Ibsen and Burial by Neil Cross

How many re-reads?
No complete re-reads, though lots of partial re-reads thanks to the dissertation.

Most books read by one author this year?
I’ve been having a bit of an Ian Rankin-fest recently, and have read three of his Rebus novels in the last month.

Any in translation?
Two Ibsen plays.

And how many of this year’s books were from the library?
None, I’m afraid. However, I have borrowed an extraordinary number of books that I did not read from cover to cover (and so are not listed on the blog) for dissertation reading. So, while it doesn’t look like I’ve read very much this year, I have in fact read LOADS. It was just mostly academic and not really blog-able.

Over to you guys…
