All of these books now become the shortlist for the overal Costa Book of the Year prize, which will be announced on 26 January.

Novel of the Year Brooklyn by Colm Toibin
First Novel of the Year Beauty by Raphael Selbourne
Poetry Book of the Year A Scattering by Christopher Reid
Biography of the Year The Strangest Man: The Hidden Life of Paul Dirac, Quantum Genius by Graham Farmelo
Children’s Book of the Year The Ask and the Answer by Patrick Ness

I know lots of people have loved Brooklyn, and this is, after all, the first major prize that Colm Toibin has won. Has anyone read any of the other books here, and if so, what did you think?
